When you’re a kid, everything feels like a surprise. As you get older, there are fewer and fewer chances to truly be surprised. We fall into the routine of plans, schedules, and repetition. When I get the opportunity to be involved in a surprise, it’s truly so exciting. Simply because of the fact that it isn’t often we get to witness such magical moments as adults. The happiness, pure joy, and sheer emotions make shooting surprise proposals one of my absolute favorites.
An Adventurous Love
This extended family from Canada comes to Hawaii every year to vacation. This year was extra special because a surprise engagement was in store, and boy was I pumped to start the day! Everything was planned out by the boyfriend and his sister, as we headed out for an “adventure shoot”, which itself was super fun. We hiked to the top of the mountain where Makapu’u Lighthouse is located and there are spectacular views of the East Oahu coastline. I hiked up ahead and hid out in the bushes, waiting (not so patiently) for my cue. I was ready for the true fun to start!
The Moments that Take your Breath Away
As soon as he dropped down on one knee, I jumped to attention. My heart swelled as I captured each magical moment as it unfolded. The view was breathtaking, the moment was surreal, and the proposal was absolutely perfect. After the highly anticipated “yes!”, the groom-to-be’s helpful sister brought out champagne to celebrate. The family Face Timed their grandparents back in Canada to share the good news, and everyone was overjoyed.
As an Oahu engagement photographer, I’m so lucky to be surrounded by all the excitement, happiness, and joy of milestone moments. What a treat it was meeting and capturing these sweet moments with this Canadian family as their surprise engagement photographer.
